1970 – Barr Captures Second Midwest Championship at Paragon

Allan Barr

Paragon, Ind. (August 1, 1970) – In one of the most dramatic running of the Midwest Super Modified Sprint Championship, Allan Barr of Columbus, Ind., wheeled the Shore Brothers Chevy #41 to the coveted title on Saturday night to win the eighth annual 150-lap grind and a big share of the $6,200 in prize money at Paragon Speedway.

He joined Dick Gaines of Mitchell and Gene Henson as the only two-time winners of the annual speed event. Barr also won the crown in 1965.

The 20 fastest qualifiers started the feature straight up with the top four finishers from the consolation at the rear to make up the 24-car field.

Rex Mitchell of Bloomington jumped out in front at the green flag from his pole position but on lap 45 Larry Miller took over the lead and stayed out front for the next 100 circuits to collect the biggest share of the lap money ($8 a lap).

Barr made his biggest move as he had come all the way from his 19th starting position to overtake Miller for the lead on lap 146.

So dramatic was the running of the championship race that the first six finishers were on the same lap and the yellow flag came out only three times during the contest.

Barr collected $1,048 for the win while Miller earned $1,408 for his runner-up finish.
