Burlington, Iowa (September 26, 1987) – Bob Dominacki of Bettendorf won the battle, and Ray Cox Jr. of Davenport won the war Saturday night as the IMCA Modified National Series concluded its 21-race 1987 schedule at 34 Raceway Park.
Dominacki prevailed through several caution periods as he won the 25-lap feature race over a field of 63 IMCA modifieds.
Cox Jr., however, captured the National Series point title over Martin Bennett of Des Moines. Cox Jr. had a 40-point lead going into the finale and stretched that as he qualified for the feature and Bennett did not.
It was striking similar to last year when Dude Thompson of Huxley defeated Steve Streeter of Bloomfield for the title. However, in that one, it was Thompson sitting I the pits not qualified, while Streeter made the feature and tried to overtake him.
The series this year took drivers to Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Dominacki was chased across the finish line by Terry Ryan of Davenport, Sonny Smyser of Lancaster, Mo., Dave Farren of Des Moines, and Steve Johnson of Camanche.
IMCA modified heat races were won by Ryan, Larry Grafton of Des Moines, Farren, Dr. Kent Kaplan of Ankeny, Danny Allen of Danville, Ill., and Smyser. Bruce Hanford and Jack Lueth, both of Davenport, and Jim Anderson of Des Moines won B-features.
In the sportsman division, Terry Schlipman of Mendon, Ill., captured the feature race over Jim Hollenbeck of Burlington.
