Des Moines, Iowa (September 7, 1953) – Bobby Grim, the Indianapolis speedster, breezed to an easy victory Monday night in the 25-lap feature in the revival of night racing at the Iowa State Fair.
The 27-year-old driver was so far ahead of his International Motor Contest Association rivals that the dust, if there had been any, would have settled by the time second-place Bob Slater and third-place Dick Ferguson crossed the finish line.
Grim’s margin was about a quarter of a mile.
It was strictly a battle between Kansas City’s Slater, the number two driver in the current IMCA point standings, and Ferguson, the west coast star who beat Grim here last week.
Slater, who is only 600 points behind leader Deb Snyder, took Ferguson’s measure on the 22nd lap and held a car-length’s edge to the end of the race, which Grim finished in 14 minutes and 51.55 seconds.
Finishing behind Ferguson by several additional car lengths was Wayne Selzer, the Sioux Citian, while Jimmy Campbell of Bates City, Mo., was fifth.
Selzer, Campbell, and newcomer, Roy Blindstrup of Rock Island, Ill., were the respective heat winners with Campbell also winning the special 3-lap trophy dash.
