Bob Sweikert was the man to beat in auto racing in 1955.
Salem, Ind. (September 25, 1955)- Bob Sweikert clinched the Midwest AAA sprint car championship Sunday by winning the 25-mile feature at Salem Speedway. He became the first driver ever to win this title, the AAA national big-car championship, and the Indianapolis 500-mile race in the same year.
Sweikert’s winning time was 17 minutes and 22.15 seconds, breaking the old mark of 17 minutes and 35.04 seconds set by Pat O’Conner in 1954.
Sweikert, automatically the last AAA champion because the American Automobile Association is withdrawing from auto racing after this year, said John Zink of Tulsa, Okla., is building him a new racer for the 1956 Indianapolis race.
