Plover, Wis. (September 10, 1978) – Mike Miller of Wisconsin Rapids powered his Olds Cutlass into the lead on the 44th circuit of the Dairyland 150 at Golden Sands Speedway on Sunday, and after a fender-to-fender struggle during which he and Tom Reffner exchanged the lead several times, hung on to capture the first prize.
John Knaus of Rockford started on the pole position and led the first 11 laps before Marv Marzofka of Nekoosa took over. Marzofka would lead the next 32 laps until Miller passed him.
Jim Back of Vesper and Dick Trickle of Wisconsin Rapids started well back in the field and were moving up throughout the contest, but Miller only surrendered the top spot for only two laps (138-139), those to Reffner.
John Knaus’ blown engine at the 141st lap brought out the caution flag and tightened up the field, but Miller was up to the challenge, holding Reffner at bay for the remaining 10 laps.
Wausau’s Larry Detjens finished third followed by Back in fourth, and Mark Martin of Batesville, Ark., in fifth.
Miller also won the 25-lap All-Star Showdown, nosing out both Back and Reffner.
Rick Haase of Brokaw won the 25-lap semi-feature and Gary Porter of Wisconsin Rapids won the 15-lap consolation for non-money winners.
