1967 - Gardner Out of Gas; Helm Cops Tipton Title

Bob Helms holds his trophy after his stunning victory in the season championship at Tipton.

Tipton, Iowa (September 17, 1967) – Jim Gardner of Tipton was 300 feet and a gallon of gas away from winning the 25-lap season championship here Sunday evening when the unbelievable happened.
