1962 – Richert, Williams Take Clay County Features

Jerry Richert and car owner Dave MacDonald accept their trophy from former IMCA champion Emory Collins after his feature win at the Clay County Fair. IMCA officials Gene Van Winkle (far left) and Al Sweeney (far right) join them in victory lane.

Spencer, Iowa (September 13, 1962) – Jerry Richert, Forest Lake, Minn., and Carl Williams, Kansas City, scored International Motor Contest Association victories at the annual Clay County Fair.

Richert took the lead from Pete Folse on the first lap of the sprint car feature and held his advantage through the 20 laps on the hard, slick surface which was to his liking.

Richert’s win, before an afternoon crowd of 5,500, brought to a halt the three-race winning streak of Folse, who had won two races here in 1960 and another in ’61.

Time for the 20 laps was 10 minutes and 10.41 seconds.

The first IMCA-sanctioned midget race in Northwest Iowa won the hearts of speed fans as Williams wheeled his sleek-looking Offy to a 20-lap feature win before 4,500 in the nightcap.

Heat wins went to Williams, Buzz Rose, Harry Kerns, and Bill Murphy. Gordon Woolley won the match race.

Time of the race was 9 minutes and 54.45 seconds.
