Jackson, Minn. (August 23, 1986) – In track announcer Tom Savage’s words, the eighth annual Jackson Nationals will be remembered as “the most closely-contested Nationals so far.”
Bobby Allen of Hanover, Penn., survived a number of lead changes and challenges en route to the title of the 410-cubic inch division of the Jackson Nationals Saturday night at Jackson Speedway. The win was worth $7,500 but lap money and qualifying night money may have pushed Allen’s weekend winnings to over $9,000.
After the second attempt to start the main event, Allen and Danny Lasoski of Dover, Mo., excited the near-capacity crowd by trading the lead several times in the first six laps. Each lap, Allen would take the lead coming out of turn two only to lose it to Lasoski coming out of turn four. Allen hugged the bottom of the track while Lasoski let it all hang out on the high side.
Within two car lengths of the two frontrunners were the charging Jimmy Sills of Sacramento, Calif., and Dave Blaney of Hartford, Ohio, who made it a four-car race for the top spot. On the seventh lap, the four leaders entered lap traffic, where Allen would take control.
Two laps later, Sills and Lasoski made contact, resulting in a race-ending crash for Sills into the front stretch wall.
Blaney slipped by Lasoski on the restart and took over the chase for the lead. By lap 15, Blaney and Allen were side-by-side. Again, Allen was glued to the bottom while his new challenger, Blaney, stayed on the high side.
Blaney took the lead on lap 16 and lost it back to Allen on lap 17. Blaney took the lead on lap 18 but once again lost it to Allen on lap 19. Blaney appeared to have the lead for good on lap 20. He lost it, however, on lap 24 when he became trapped in lapped traffic.
Allen got by Blaney and led the final six circuits, closely pursued by Blaney, Brad Doty of Fredericksburg, Ohio, who moved by Lasoski halfway through the race to garner third. Lasoski hung on to finish fourth and Rodney Duncan of Columbus, Ohio, rounded out the top-five.
The initial attempt to start the 30-lap feature was marred by a nasty flip off turn one by Rick Ferkel of Tiffin, Ohio. The accident eliminated both Ferkel and Jerry Richert Jr. of Forest Lake, Minn.
Bobby Houseman of Estherville, Iowa, shot by John Sernett of Minneapolis and Roger Rager of Mound on the 19th lap to win the 20-lap B-feature.
Bill Rook of Sioux Falls, S.D., led all 25 laps of the limited sprint car feature and captured the $1,000 first prize. Rook, who won Thursday night’s qualifier, had to fight off the late race advances of fellow Sioux Falls driver Kevin McIntyre.
