Jay Woodside
Des Moines, Iowa (August 20, 1967) – Jay Woodside, the 27-year-old Kansas City carpenter, made his International Motor Contest Association victory of the season a profitable one Sunday afternoon, winning the 25-lap sprint car feature at the Iowa State Fair.
Woodside pocketed $750 as he took the lead off the first turn and held off veteran Gordon Woolley of Waco, Tex., the remainder of the way.
The victory climaxed a busy two days for Woodside and his Ted Hall Chevy. He finished sixth in the sprint car feature Saturday afternoon at the Missouri State Fair, then put a cage on the car that night and won the junior super-modified crown.
Woodside also led in qualifying, spinning the slick State Fair half-mile oval in 24.68 seconds, then winning the 10-lap wreck-marred consolation.
His only setback came in the first heat when he dropped out of the race and in the trophy dash where he finished third behind Jerry Blundy of Galesburg, Ill., and Woolley.
Blundy pushed Woodside the first 10 laps of the feature, then dropped out with engine problems. Woolley then pressured Woodside to the finish. Jon Backlund of Kansas City finished third with
Hawkeye Futurity winner Jim Moughan of Springfield, Ill., placed no better than seventh in the feature driving Merle Heath’s Chevy. Don Daniels of St. Paul., Minn., was in Hector Honore’s Black Deuce that won the Futurity but had no luck on Sunday.
Another victim of misfortune was IMCA point leader Karl Busson of Toledo, Ohio. He started off on a sour note when he tagged the wall in time trials. Busson took over Bob Tomlinson’s car but could do no better than 11th in the feature.
