Cresco, Iowa (August 23, 1974) – Karl Sanger captured his fourth Inside Pole Racing Association late model feature of the season Friday night at the Howard County Fairgrounds.
Dave Bjorge and Ron Kester, both of Austin, Minn., each won a pair of features in the late model division at Cresco this summer.
“When the track is like what it was tonight, I feel like it’s up to me to take advantage of the opportunity,” said Sanger, referring to the hard-slick conditions of the 4/10-mile track.
“It’s really just a matter of learning how to ride with the track,” said Sanger, almost surprised that more drivers haven’t picked up on his cornering methods for negotiating on fast dirt.
“If it’s not raining here in Northern Iowa on Labor Day, I’ll be here,” he said.
The Labor Day race program is the season finale at Cresco.
Starting in the third row of the 15-car field, Sanger quickly advanced into second place after one lap behind IRPA late model point leader Willy Richardson of Hayfield, who began in the second row.
On the second turn, Sanger pushed his 1968 Chevelle into the top spot and built up a healthy margin over the rest of the field, despite four restarts, which chipped into his lead during the course of the 25-lap main event.
Sanger gained $300 out of the $2,500 total purse.
Floyd Lenoch, the IRPA promoter, succeeded in kicking a 25-yard field goal at intermission, gaining $500 extra for the Labor Day race card purse from Dale Schissel, owner of the Tower Supper Club in in Cresco, and Jerry Henderson, owner of the Stoplight Café in Cresco.
Ron Mayer of Riceville won the wreck-marred street stock feature.
