Opperman added another trophy to his vast collection after winning the Missouri
Futurity at Sedalia. Announcer Jimmy Glenn, chief mechanic Gary Swenson and
IMCA’s Woody Brinkman complete the foursome.
Sedalia, Mo. (August 24, 1975) – One of the most nationally known sprint car drivers in the country, Jan Opperman, who now reside in Noxon, Mont., was the victor of the 1975 Missouri Futurity, which climaxed six racing events sanctioned by National Speedways, Inc. and the International Motor Contests Association.
Opperman started on the inside of the fifth row. He took over the lead on lap 16 and was never headed thereafter.
Roger Rager of Mound, Minn., the sprint car champion from Knoxville, Iowa, was runner-up to Opperman in the afternoon program which was delayed an hour and half because of overlapping of the motorcycle racing that morning. The two-and-a-half-hour auto racing program was over in time so the motorcycles could take to the track again for their evening program.
A couple of pre-race favorites, Sedalia’s Bill Utz and Gene Gennetten of Gladstone were among those who took to the pits when their fuel consumption was too great, and they were unable to stay with the lead pack.
Utz, Eddie Leavitt of Kearney – the 1975 Futurity winner, Opperman and Phil Howe of Jacksonville, Ill., were heat winners while Roy Comstock of Versailles won the Australian Pursuit.
