Des Moines, Iowa (August 22, 1965) – Jerry Richert, back on the scene as the International Motor Contest Association big car champion, had one of the biggest money winning days of his return on Sunday at the Iowa State Fair.
The Lake Forest, Minn., veteran claimed the opening 10-mile sprint feature in the afternoon with a record run before 12,000 fans.
Then Richert, who was on the United States Auto Club’s circuit earlier this season, grabbed the 12.5-mile feature during the nightcap.
The two triumphs, his sixth and seventh of the season, were worth $700 each.
Gordon Woolley, the current IMCA point leader, from Waco, Tex., finished seventh in the afternoon matinee and ninth in the evening program. Wooley was running fifth when he spun out on lap 23 on the night feature.
Richert’s record for the 10-miler was 7 minutes and 26.88 seconds. The previous mark was 8 minutes and 24 seconds set by Bob Cleburg in 1957. Richert was driving the Wagner Chevrolet.
There were only three yellow flags dropped during the night program, but the afternoon competition was filled with spinouts and crashes on the hard, slick half-mile track.
Leon Wieske of St. Clair Shores, Mich., was treated and released from an area hospital after a double flip during a time trial attempt.
There was a four-car scramble during the consolation when Jay Woodside of Overland Park, Kan., hit the turn three wall. Bill Eubank of Danville, Ind., Mac Terry of Torrance, Calif., and John Arnold of Salem, Ill., all spun into Woodside. No one was injured.
The only serious accident occurred on lap 23 when Bill Puterbaugh of Roxana, Ill., lost a wheel coming out of turn one and smacked the wall.
Richert caught Jim Moughan of Springfield, Ill., last season’s Rookie of the Year, on lap 14 of the afternoon feature and then won going away.
During the nightcap, he passed Tom Bigelow of Whitewater, Wis., on lap 4, then fended off Moughan for the rest of the race.
