St. Paul, Minn. (August 28, 1961) – Dick Hutcherson, a 29-year-old Keokuk, Iowa, construction company owner, edged Ernie Derr by 30 yards to capture the 100-lap late model stock car race before 11,712 spectators Monday at the Minnesota State Fair.
Hutcherson turned the 50 miles in 46 minutes and 44.99 seconds, a Minnesota State Fair track record. The old mark of 47 minutes and 44.96 seconds was set by Johnny Beauchamp of Harlan, Iowa, in 1956. Hutcherson drove a 1961 Ford while Derr wheeled a 1961 Pontiac.
Buzz McCann of St. Paul finished third, more than a lap behind the winner, while Beauchamp finished fourth.
McCann broke two State Fair records, crashing the half-mile standard in time trials with a clocking of 27.25 seconds, and also broke the 5-mile record, winning the first heat in the time of 4 minutes and 48.51 seconds.
Ramo Stott won a duel with Hutcherson to capture the second 10-lap heat while Chub Liebe of Oelwein, Iowa, outran Jerry McCredie of Keokuk in the 12-lap consolation.
