1972 – John Moss Wins at Southern Iowa Fair

John Moss copped the late model feature at the Mahaska County Fairgrounds.

Oskaloosa. Iowa (august 3, 1972) - Drivers at the Southern Iowa Fair committed a Cardinal sin here Thursday night - they let big John Moss of Iowa City get in front.

Moss took the lead on the eighth lap on a red flag restart and there was no catching the big guy although Bill McDonough of Cedar Rapids and Ed Sanger of Waterloo made it one of the closest finishes of the season.

Moss, McDonough and Sanger were all virtually bumper-to-bumper in an exceptional hard and fast race the rest of the way. The win was worth $650 to Moss, who took his third feature of the season.

Moss took the lead on the restart after leader Ron Perdock of Washington and second place Joe Merryfield of Des Moines collided as Perdock went high between the first and second turns and Merryfield attempted to slip past. About eight cars were involved in the mishap but all stayed in the feature.

Moss also won the first heat in another furious duel with Sanger. Moss took the lead on the fourth lap and the two stayed side-by-side for four solid laps before Moss edged in front.

Perdock led all the way in the second heat, withstanding challenges by Don Hoffman of Des Moines and Bill McDonough. Hoffman edged McDonough by inches at the finish as both were trying to overhaul Perdock in a furious finish.

Packwood’s Dan Dickey led all the way in the third heat with Merryfield overtaking Ottumwa’s Johnny Babb to take second by a bumper.

Merryfield came back to lead all the way in the Australian pursuit with only one car eliminated.

Tim McDonough, 19-year-old son of Bill McDonough, scored his first win here in the semi-main. He did it with plenty of room to spare.
