LaVern "Red" Droste
Cedar Rapids, Iowa (August 23, 1964) – Mid-Continent Racing Association point leader Red Droste copped the 50-lap feature and picked up two trophies plus over $350 in prize money at the All-Iowa Fair championship modified stock car races Sunday afternoon.
Droste, the veteran driver from Waterloo whose hard to catch when he’s out front, also won the trophy dash and the semi-main competition on the Fair’s final racing card, attended by over 4,000 fans.
Jim Gerber of Mt. Joy, the feature winner in the Fair’s modified stock car program Saturday night, finished second in the championship feature. Tom Hughes of Monticello was third and Verlin Eaker of Blooming Prairie, Minn., placed fourth.
Hughes led the 18-car field for the first half of the 50-lap main event, but Droste took over just past the midway point, just after the race had been restarted when a mix-up in the second turn sent John Moss of Iowa City spinning.
Ralph Heinzman of Guttenberg, Reinbeck’s Cal Swanson, and Del Williams of Moline, Ill., were heat winners. However, neither of the three winners finished better than sixth in the feature.
Gerber, who moved to fourth in the MCRA point standings, also finished second to Droste in the trophy dash and semi-main.
