1954 – Ward’s Hot Hudson a Winner at Belleville

California's Lou Figaro, driving under the alias Jimmy Ward of Chicago, won the 100-lap IMCA late model stock car feature at the Belleville High Banks.

Belleville, Kan. (September 3, 1954) – Jimmy Ward, Chicago, wheeled his 1954 Hudson Hornet to victory in the annual 100-mile IMCA late model stock car race at the North Central Kansas Free Fair. A crowd of 5,000 watched the event.

Ward took an early lead but Larry Farr of Chicago, driving a 1952 Packard, caught him on the 15th lap and held it until the 23rd lap, when he crashed through a fence on the backstretch and heavily damaged his car. He suffered injuries to his right arm.

Ward inherited the lead after the race was restarted and held it the remainder of the way. He was challenged several times by Ernie Derr, Keokuk, Iowa, but managed to withstand Derr’s determination and eventually had a cushion of a full lap at the finish.

Derr set a new one-lap record at the Belleville track during time trials, turning the half-mile dirt oval in 26.41 seconds, breaking Marvin Copple’s old mark of 27.19 seconds.
