Davenport, Iowa (September 8, 1967) – Darrell Dake of Cedar Rapids grabbed a fourth-place finish in the semi-main, then wound his Ford Fairlane up in the 50-lap season championship on the Mississippi Valley Fairground’s oval on Friday and grabbed the checkered flag and the season title.
Dake started on the outside of the front row with fellow townsman Verlin Eaker on the pole. Dake took an early lead and started to move out when a spinout on lap 28 sidelined several cars and halted the field.
The restart gave the advantage to Eaker, who rode Dake’s tailpipe the rest of the way as Darrell was unable to open up a wide gap between the two competitors.
Bill McDonough of Cedar Rapids finished third ahead of Don Bohlander of Glasford, Ill., and Dean Montgomery of Moline, Ill.
In winning the 50-lap feature, Dake became another winner…as he was awarded a free trip to Florida by promoter Homer Melton and Wynn Friction Proofing Co.
Modified heat winners were John Brockman of Walcott, Lyle McNall of Aledo, Ill., and Johnny Beauchamp of Atlantic.
Terry Ryan of Davenport won the novice feature.
