1967 – Stott Banks $1,100 for New Model Win at State Fair

 

Ramo Stott won the 250-lap IMCA new model stock car race at the Iowa State Fair. 

Des Moines, Iowa (August 27, 1967) – Ramo Stott shot past fellow Keokuk driver Ernie Derr on lap 167 to win the 250-lap IMCA new model stock car race Sunday night at the Iowa State Fair.

It was a see-saw battle up until Stott took full command. Derr might have erased his chance at victory with three pit stops, instead of the normal two. He took on fuel on the 100th circuit, made his mandatory stop, then took another fuel top before it was over.

Stott, on the other hand, made his mandatory stop then one tank filling stop and coasted past Derr with extra time to his advantage.

A crowd of 9,000 saw the Iowa State Fair auto racing finale with 29 cars competing on the half-mile dirt oval. There was a lot of action and Jerry Trapp of Milwaukee was hospitalized with minor injuries after a four-car pileup at the halfway point of the race.

Hard-charging Ole Brua of Albert Lea, Minn., was a solid third, driving his 1964 Ford along with the front-runners all night. Lenny Funk of Otis, Kan., was fourth and Norm Hall of Russell, Minn., finished fifth.

Stott pocketed $1,100 for his night’s work. Stott drove a 1967 Plymouth and Derr piloted a 1967 Dodge.

A new IMCA record was set for the 250-lap distance. Stott turned the distance in 1 hour, 50 minutes and 37 seconds, erasing his own previous mark of 1 hour, 55 minutes, and 39 seconds.
