Joe Shear
Wisconsin Dells, Wis. (July 6, 1974) – A record crowd of 6,580 saw Joe Shear of South Beloit, Ill., and Dick Trickle of Wisconsin Rapids take the victory flag in the “Twin-50” late model features at Dells Motor Speedway on Saturday night.
Shear took the checkered flag in the first 50-lap feature ahead of Vesper’s Jim Back.
The event was restarted after two laps were completed when Fred Bender blew the engine in his 1973 Camaro. When that happened, oil spilled onto to the track in the first turn and sent Bender and Marv Marzofka of Nekoosa into the wall. Bender’s car received front end damage while Marzofka’s 1974 Camaro received front, side, and rear damage. Neither driver was seriously injured, however, Marzofka was taken to a local hospital with leg and hip problems.
After the restart, Fluff Furo blew his engine on lap 15 but took to the pits before any oil was spilled.
The early leader was Tom Musgrave until the 14th lap when Bill Oas took over the top spot. Oas’s lead was short-lived when Shear took over on lap 22 and led the remaining 28 circuits.
On lap 39, Mike Miller spun out, collecting Dick Trickle, and sending them both into the wall. Miller was unable to continue but Trickle was able to continue despite some minor damage.
Ed Howe of Beaverton, Mich., finished third behind Back.
In the second 50-lapper, John Scott of Onalaska took the lead but for only four laps before Trickle sped by. Trickle would pull away from the rest of the field, extending his lead to half-a-lap at times. Jim Back was runner-up for the second time with John Reimer of Caledonia taking third.
In time trials, Ed Howe was clocked at fast time with a 14.950-second lap.
