1963 – IMCA’s White in Third Straight at Winchester

Johnny White
Winchester, Ind. (June 23, 1963) – Johnny White proved he is “King of the High Banks” in IMCA big car racing as he took his third straight feature win Sunday afternoon on the famous half-mile, high-banked Winchester Speedway.
White, starting on the outside first row alongside fast qualifier Red Amick, shot his Weinberger Homes Chevy ahead of Amick’s Fetter Aluminum Chevy in the first turn and was never headed after that.
Running smoothly the entire 30 laps, White took off 30 seconds off Bob King’s record set exactly one year ago. White’s time of 9 minutes and 17 seconds is a new IMCA record, but did not erase the 30-lap record held by Roger McCluskey of 9 minutes and 14 seconds set last September in a USAC-sanctioned event.
Amick was able to keep his sights on White as he finished second in only his second drive since coming out of retirement. Norman Brown took third, Gordon Woolley grabbed fourth, and pavement ace Jim McCune rounded out the top five.
Amick topped the 30-car field in qualifications with an 18.06 second lap. Johnny White spun on his first lap but came back with an 18.07 on the second tour. Fourteen cars qualified in the 18 second bracket.
Amick, White, and Al Smith took heat wins while White grabbed trophy dash honors. Don Friend earned a hard-fought win in the semi-main over Bob Coulter.
