1966 - Goldsmith Wins Volunteer 500

Bristol, Tenn. (July 24, 1966) - Paul Goldsmith's victory in the 250-mile Volunteer 500 was the kind they make movies about in Hollywood.

The Munster, Ind., Plymouth driver charged into the lead just four laps from the finish and took the checkered flag at the Bristol International Speedway just two seconds ahead of relief driver Jim Paschal of High Point, N.C.

Paschal had taken over the wheel of the 1966 Plymouth of Richard Petty of Randleman, N. C., on the 377th lap. Petty questioned Goldsmith's victory, but no errors were found in a recheck of the scoring.

Goldsmith averaged 77.962 miles per hour and earned $5,050 for the win.

A track record was set when 375 laps were completed without a caution flag, the first yellow flag went out when Bob Cooper of Gastonia, N. C. blew his engine on the 376th lap.

Curtis Turner of Charlotte, who started in the pole in a 1966 Chevrolet, set a record pace for the first 80 laps, but retired with a broken rocker arm after 248 laps.

Third place went to David Pearson of Spartanburg, S.C., in a 1966 Dodge Charger. Paul Lewis, Johnson City, Tenn., fourth in a 1965 Plymouth and Bobby Allison of Hueytown Ala., finished fifth in a 1965 Chevelle.

Goldsmith's win was his third of the season. He took over the lead when Turner ran into mechanical troubles, but fell behind on lap 159 when Petty forged ahead. Goldsmith charged from behind four laps from the finish after Paschal took over from Petty.
